What is going to happen

From October 29 to November 1 the Affordable Art Fair will be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The nice people of gallery Carré d'Artistes are going to be there to present the work of Jan-Hein Arens and several others.

Arens' first solo exhibition in the United States is a fact. Starting September 24 his work is on display at the CUSP NYC Gallery. If you're in the neighbourhood just have a look; CUSP NYC Gallery, 466 Washington Street, 10013 New York. Or have a look at their facebookpage.

Jan-Hein Arens (born on September 23, 1974 in Vught, the Netherlands) is a painter, sculptor and illustrator. He studied graphic design and illustration at the Grafische School Eindhoven from 1992 until 1996.

After his education Arens felt himself unsatisfied on a creative level from his work as a graphic designer, and so he started to paint and draw in his spare time. After a short period he discovered that art suited him much better than working as a designer so he turned things around; he started working as an artist, and as a part time graphic designer.

The art of Arens concentrates on basic human needs and emotions. By adding different, strange elements, often painted in a realistic way, or placing them out of context the spectator is forced to make up his/her own reason or meaning for the work.

Humour and alienation are essential elements in Arens’ work. Small scribbles of text written directly on the canvas with pen and ink complete the image or just ad confusion.

Biography / Curriculum vitae

These drawings are made with acrylics, ink, lots of coffee, loud music and drawing chalk on paper.

Most of them go to Carré d'Artistes, some of them go to KickArts gallery and sometimes they just stay with me.

100 crappy drawings is a book with a selection of 100 drawings. Throughout the years these drawings have found their way to galleries in France, Australia and the Netherlands.

From the introduction:

'I discovered that drawing is an art form that suits me more than fine. It’s nothing fancy, just a piece of paper, a bit of paint, some blue and white drawing chalk and pen and ink. But opposed to painting it is very fast, and I like to work fast. I even have a hair dryer in my studio to dry paint so I can move on (lots of coffee and loud music also help).

So, enough with the artistic romance, let’s get on to the drawings. In this book you will find a selection of 100 drawings, which were sold in different galleries over the years. I redid them, because the originals were in colour. If a single drawing is framed, colour is great, but once they are made into a book it will look more like a candy store than an art book. And yes, I did take the opportunity to correct and improve some.'
